Meet our Founder

Rod Kolstee
Founder
Rod Kolstee's vision and dedication led to the establishment of Lakers Disabled Hockey in 2003, a pioneering initiative that brought together individuals with disabilities to experience the joy and camaraderie of hockey. The organization aimed to provide an inclusive environment where participants could develop their skills, foster teamwork, and cultivate a passion for the sport.
Kolstee's efforts were instrumental in creating a supportive community, breaking down barriers, and challenging preconceptions about the capabilities of disabled athletes. His commitment to the cause has inspired many and continues to impact the lives of participants and their families.
Lakers Disabled Hockey has grown over the years, celebrating numerous achievements and milestones. The program not only focuses on athletic development but also emphasizes personal growth, self-confidence, and social connections. Through Kolstee's leadership, the organization has become a model for inclusivity in sports, showing that with determination and support, everyone can enjoy the thrill of hockey.
However, life threw Rod an unexpected curveball. During his illustrious coaching career, he was diagnosed with an incurable disease. This diagnosis forced him to step down from his role as coach, a heartbreaking turn of events for someone who had invested so much of his heart and soul into the team. With these changes came another; In 2025, the Lakers disabled hockey team underwent a significant transformation with a name change to Chautauqua County Sled Stars. This rebranding marked a new chapter in the team's history, reflecting a broader vision and commitment to inclusivity and excellence in sled hockey.
