Our History

It all began with a simple idea fueled by a deep passion.

In 2003, Rod Kolstee envisioned a world where disabled youth could experience the joy and camaraderie of playing a sport they love. It was a vision born from compassion and a desire to create opportunities where none existed. This vision materialized into the Jamestown Lakers Disabled Hockey team, a beacon of hope and inclusivity in the world of sports.

Rod's vision was not just about creating a team; it was about forging a community. The Jamestown Lakers, often referred to as "sled hockey" or "para-hockey," became more than just a sports team. It became a lifeline for many disabled youth, offering them a chance to participate, to compete, and to feel a sense of belonging. The impact of this initiative rippled through the community, changing lives and breaking down barriers.

Under Rod's leadership, the Lakers Disabled Hockey team flourished. Rod's dedication and hard work were evident in every practice, every game, and every victory. He was not just a coach; he was a mentor, a guide, and a friend to many. His efforts ensured that the team was not only competitive but also a place where players could grow, both as athletes and as individuals.

However, life threw Rod an unexpected curveball. During his illustrious coaching career, he was diagnosed with an incurable disease. This diagnosis forced him to step down from his role as coach, a heartbreaking turn of events for someone who had invested so much of his heart and soul into the team. Yet, the strength of Rod's vision lay not in his presence but in the community he had built. The Lakers Disabled Hockey team continued to thrive, embodying the principles and values Rod had instilled.

Our Future

In the 2024-2025 season, the torch of leadership was passed to Kathleen Mueller, who was selected to carry on Rod's legacy. Kathleen, with her unwavering dedication and passion for the sport, took the helm as coach and leader. Under her guidance, the team will continue to build on the foundation laid by Rod, ensuring that his vision remains alive and vibrant. Despite Rod Kolstee taking a step down, he is still a large part of the team he built.

The journey of the Jamestown Lakers took another turn as unforeseen obstacles led to a transformation. The team evolved into the Chautauqua County Sled Stars, a new name but with the same spirit and determination. This change was not merely a rebranding; it was a testament to resilience and adaptability. Despite the name change, the core of Rod Kolstee's vision — to enrich lives through sports — remains steadfast.

The Chautauqua County Sled Stars continue to embody the principles of inclusivity, community, and excellence. Rod’s legacy lives on through the players, coaches, and supporters who carry forward the torch. His hard work and dedication have sown seeds of change that would continue to flourish, making an impact in the community for generations to come.
